In 1971, John Draper (no relation to Don) assumed the moniker “Captain Crunch” after discovering the toy whistle found inside Captain Crunch cereal boxes emitted the same 2600 Hz tone that controlled AT&T's long distance switches. Thus, Draper and his fellow “phreakers” could now call mom for free.
